Rocco Chinnici

Rocco Chinnici (born January 19, 1925 in Misilmeri , † July 29, 1983 in Palermo ) was an Italian public prosecutor and investigative judge . He particularly took by fighting the Mafia in appearance and in 1983 by an attack with a car bomb killed.

Life

Chinnici studied law at the University of Palermo , which he left in 1947. From 1952 he worked as a public prosecutor, initially in Trapani . In 1966 he moved to the public prosecutor's office in Palermo. After his predecessor Cesare Terranova was murdered, Chinnici headed the authority from 1979 and became chief judge on the Supreme Judicial Council (it: " Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura "). During his tenure, together with Giovanni Falcone , Gioacchino Natoli and Paolo Borsellino , he founded the Antimafia Pool to better combat organized crime . He especially encouraged Falcone to continue investigating the Cosa Nostra . In particular, the Pizza Connection succeeded in breaking a merger between the Cosa Nostra and the American La Cosa Nostra for the purpose of drug trafficking .

Chinnici was one of the first to speak out publicly against the Cosa Nostra and give lectures in order to create an anti-mafia culture. He repeatedly called for extensive protective measures for himself and his employees; In previous years, the active fighters against organized crime had often had to forego the protection of bodyguards , which was more likely to be granted to politicians.

It was also Chinnici who in 1983 signed the arrest warrant for the powerful boss of the Ciaculli family, Michele Greco , and many other well-known members of the Cosa Nostra .

On July 29, 1983, Chinnici was killed by the mafia killer Pino Greco using a car bomb at the height of the " Mattanza ", a synonym for the Second Mafia War . Two of his bodyguards and the concierge of his apartment complex also died in the attack .
