Roch Valin (born 1918 in Jonquière , Saguenay ; † May 2012 in Montreal ) was a Canadian linguist and Romance scholar .

life and work

Valin attended high school in Chicoutimi and studied from 1942 French and Latin at Laval University in Québec . From 1948 to 1951 he studied linguistics at the Sorbonne and at the École pratique des hautes études and became a student of Gustave Guillaume , with whom he remained in contact from then on, but without ever completing a doctorate. From 1951 to 1959 he directed language training for foreigners at Laval University. From 1960 to 1970 he headed the Institute of Linguistics founded on his initiative, the first of its kind in Canada. At the same time he taught at the Institut Catholique de Paris (also at the Universities of Strasbourg and Chambéry) the linguistic theory of Gustave Guillaume, who died in 1960. From 1970 onwards, as the administrator of Guillaume's estate, he published his esteemed writings, from 1974 onwards as part of the 'Fonds Gustave Guillaume' he set up ( Leçons de linguistique , 4 vols., 1971–1974, another 12 vols. With Walter Hirtle and André Joly , 1982-1999). Until his retirement in 1986, he taught the linguistics of his teacher at Laval University, the so-called "Psychomécanique du langage".
