The Rochus Chapel in Loope

The Rochuskapelle is a chapel opened in 1682 in Engelskirchen - Loope . The chapel is a listed building.

Location and description

The chapel is located on Kapellenweg north of the B 55 in Loope. The chapel has a gable roof with a roof turret, which is attached in the middle of the roof ridge and in which a bronze bell hangs. The chapel has an altar with an altarpiece depicting Rochus of Montpellier , the patron saint of plague sufferers and domestic animals. There are two statues on the walls to the right and left of the altar . The right statue shows Rochus with a staff and a travel bag. He has a plague bump on his leg. Next to him is a dog with a piece of bread in its mouth. The statue on the left represents Anthony of Padua as a hermit.

There is a chronodistichon above the entrance door . This indicates the date of initiation, the circumstances of the establishment and the day of the conversion of Paul of Tarsus . The inscription reads:

“Rapta rvo per aqvas; te pauler vente per ignes;
sed rvrsum festo sto reparata rochi.

Johannes Ludewich PT Pastor huius parochiae “.

German translation:

“Torn away by the water, I collapse on the day that Paul falls down by the beam of light,
but I stand erect again at the feast of St. Rochus.

Johannes Ludewig, pastor of this parish. 1682, on August 16 ”.

The letters C, D, I, L, M and V are highlighted. Adding them as numerals, their total is 1682, which corresponds to the year of the inauguration.

History and use

The construction of the chapel goes back to a wave of plague in the 17th century. In 1669, citizens of Looper asked the pastor of Engelskirchen to build a chapel. The foundation stone was laid on September 25, 1674 near the Agger . A ford made it possible to cross the river at this point. On January 25, 1682, the Catholic feast day of Pauli Conversion , a flood destroyed this building. In August 1682, it was rebuilt at a greater distance in a flood-protected location at its current location.

In the following years the chapel served as a church building for the local population and was used for school fairs and religious instruction. When the capacity of the chapel was no longer sufficient, members of the community founded the Sankt Rochus-Bauverein in 1898 . He collected money for the construction of a larger church building, which was opened on December 8, 1907 in the center of Loope. Until the early 1960s, the chapel was used as a burial place for the deceased.
