Initiated by their mother, Rodolfo and Ernesto Halffter learned to make music as children. Ernesto later deepened his skills mostly self-taught , in part he was supported by Manuel de Falla . His brother was later also known as a composer, as was his nephew Cristóbal Halffter .
In Madrid, Ernesto gave concerts and composed as a pianist. He belonged to the local intellectual circles and several musical groups, including the "Grupo de Madrid" and "Grupo de los Ocho" ( German : Group of Eight ), which was part of the Generación del 27 .
During the Spanish Civil War, he arranged a series of popular songs about the struggle of the Spanish Republic against the fascist coup plotters, which were later republished in Italy on a collection of songs about the Spanish Civil War (canti della guerra di Spagna).
After the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939 Halffter emigrated to Mexico and one year later took on the Mexican citizenship.
