Rodolfo Halffter Escriche (born January 30, 1900 in Madrid , † October 14, 1987 in Mexico City ) was a Spanish - Mexican composer.

biography

Halffter came from a Spanish family of musicians. His father Ernesto Halffter Hein was a jeweler and came from Königsberg , his mother Rosario Escriche Erradón from Catalonia .

Initiated by their mother, Rodolfo and Ernesto Halffter learned to make music as children. Ernesto later deepened his skills mostly self-taught , in part he was supported by Manuel de Falla . His brother was later also known as a composer, as was his nephew Cristóbal Halffter .

In Madrid, Ernesto gave concerts and composed as a pianist. He belonged to the local intellectual circles and several musical groups, including the "Grupo de Madrid" and "Grupo de los Ocho" ( German : Group of Eight ), which was part of the Generación del 27 .

During the Spanish Civil War, he arranged a series of popular songs about the struggle of the Spanish Republic against the fascist coup plotters, which were later republished in Italy on a collection of songs about the Spanish Civil War (canti della guerra di Spagna).

After the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939 Halffter emigrated to Mexico and one year later took on the Mexican citizenship. In Mexico he made a name for himself as a composer and became a professor at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música . He was director of the Mexican music magazine "Ediciones Mexicanas de Música".

From 1963 he stayed in Spain again and again, taught as a professor of composition in Granada and Santiago de Compostela and took part in music and concert events in Cuenca and Madrid.

For his works Rodolfo Halffter was awarded the Mexican National Prize for the Arts and Humanities in 1976 and the Spanish National Prize for Music in 1985. He was a member of the Mexican Academia de Artes .
