Rodolphe Barrangou

Rodolphe Barrangou (born before 1996) is a French - American life scientist at North Carolina State University in Raleigh , North Carolina . He is considered one of the developers of the application of the CRISPR / Cas system .

Life

Barrangou obtained a bachelor's degree in life sciences from Paris Descartes University in 1996 , a master's degree in bioengineering from Compiègne University of Technology in 2000 and a master's degree in food science from North Carolina State University (NCSU) in the same year . In 2004 he obtained a Ph.D. from NCSU. in Functional Engineering and in 2011 a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin – Madison .

From 2005 Barrangou worked at DuPont in Wisconsin , first as a scientist, from 2006 as the head of a smaller working group (Senior scientist) , from 2007 as a group manager (Group manager) and from 2011 to 2013 as the director of the research and development department (R&D director ) . From 2010 he also held a teaching position (adjunct professor) for food science at Pennsylvania State University . In 2013 he received an associate professor for food science at North Carolina State University.

In 2007, a research team led by Barrangou succeeded for the first time in creating an artificial resistance to bacteriophages by incorporating CRISPR sections into bacteria . In 2016, Barrangou received a Canada Gairdner International Award and the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize for his achievements , the NAS Award in Molecular Biology in 2017 and the NAS Prize in Food and Agriculture Sciences in 2018 . He was also elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2018 and to the National Academy of Engineering in 2019 .

Barrangou is the editor of the first specialist book on the CRISPR / Cas system. As of the beginning of 2019, it has an h-index of 55.
