Rodwell Makoto

Rodwell Makoto (born August 2, 1987 ) is a Zimbabwean chess player. He has been an International Master (IM) since 2013 .

Life

Rodwell Makoto was born in 1987 as an only child. He has been living in South Africa for some time and is studying computer science alongside chess at the University of South Africa in Pretoria .

He won the South African Open in 2012 with 9/11 points and has taken part in three Chess Olympiads for Zimbabwe ( 2012 in Istanbul , 2014 in Tromsø and 2016 in Baku ). He was also part of the Zimbabwean team at the 2007 and 2011 African Games chess competitions. Makoto plays club chess for the South African Randburg Chess Club, with whom he reached third place at the 2010 African club championship in Cape Town , while at the same time achieving the best individual result on the second board.

So far, he has become a Zimbabwean chess master four times. The IM title was awarded to him for his result at the 2013 zone tournament in Gaborone . His Elo rating is 2373 (May 2017). With this he leads the Zimbabwean ranking of active players ahead of Farai Mandizha (2342) and Spencer Masango (2202). With an Elo rating of 2403 in June 2015, he was second in the Zimbabwean rankings behind Robert Gwaze , who had 2,422 points at the time.
