Rojda Aykoç (* 1978 in Kurtalan as Kadriye Şenses ) is a Kurdish singer from Turkey .

Life

Rojda Aykoç was born in 1978 in the village of Tütün near Kurtalan in the province of Siirt , Southeast Anatolia . After attending school, she went to Istanbul to study music in 1991 and began performing with the band Koma Gulên Xerzan , which her brother led. Since 1993 this band has worked with the “Mesopotamian Cultural Center” ( Mezopotamya Kültür Merkezi : MKM). In 1994 the group recorded their first album called Ji Bîr Nabin (The Unforgettable). Her second album, Sonda me (Our Oath), was created in 1997, and the song Helimcan recorded in it made Aykoç's voice popular. In the same year she joined the Koma Asmîn group of eleven women , which she later left. The third album by Koma Gulên Xerzan , Rûkena Min , was released in 2005, and the video clips for the songs Memet kanî and Elo dîno were nominated as best video clips at a video clip festival in Zaxo . In 2006 she left Koma Gulên Xerzan and began her solo career under the name Rojda . Her first solo album, Sebra min , was released in 2006.

Imprisonment for performance of the song "Heval Kamuran"

On February 9, 2010, Rojda Aykoç was arrested in her apartment for "propaganda for an illegal organization" and taken to the Beşiktaş Police Headquarters for singing the Kurdish song "Heval Kamuran" at a festival in Diyarbakır organized by the local city council . Within a few hours of taking an affidavit from Rojda Aykoç on the song, she was released. After testifying in court on February 11, 2010, Rojda Aykoç was tried on March 25, 2010 by the 4th High Criminal Court in Diyarbakır for "disseminating propaganda for an illegal organization" (Art. 7/2 of the Turkish Anti-Terror Law ) sentenced to one year and eight months imprisonment at two different concerts. The sentence pronounced by the court in Diyarbakır, which is for one year each for the performance of the song "Heval Kamuran" at two different concerts of the 9th Culture and Art Festival in Diyarbakır from 27.30. May 2009, was later reduced to ten months imprisonment for each of the two appearances "for good conduct". During their appearances in Diyarbakır, symbols of the banned PKK and of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan are said to have been shown. Rojda Aykoç was sentenced to one year and eight months' imprisonment for disseminating propaganda for the banned PKK at a time when the parliamentary constitutional commission was adopting a legislative proposal that would allow election campaigns in languages ​​traditionally spoken by Turkish citizens every day - including Kurdish This fulfilled one of the main demands of the pro-Kurdish BDP .

Rojda Aykoç is one of 160 artists who were invited to a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on February 20, 2010 to discuss the Kurdish question, but she had already announced in advance that she would not take part and stayed at the meeting remote.
