Roland Frankenberger

Roland Frankenberger (born November 30, 1967 in Eichstätt ) is a German dentist and professor of tooth preservation at the Philipps University of Marburg and at the University Clinic Gießen and Marburg . Frankenberger is known for his work in the fields of cariology (preclinical simulation and micromorphology of the enamel / dentin bond and secondary caries as well as clinical studies for the evaluation of restorative materials), endodontology (revision, obturation , post- endodontic restoration) and pediatric dentistry (Epidemiology and clinical studies). Since 2016 he has been the Dean of Studies of the Faculty of Medicine at the Philipps University of Marburg.

Life

Frankenberger studied dentistry from 1987 to 92 at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 1992 he passed his state examination and was approved. After basic military service as a medical officer in Neubrandenburg and Neuburg / Donau (1993-94), he began working as a research assistant at the Polyclinic for Dental Preservation and Periodontology at the University Hospital Erlangen . In 1999 he became Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , USA. In 2000 he obtained his habilitation and venia legendi and was appointed private lecturer and senior physician, a year later to the academic council. In 2006 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . In 2008 he became professor hc at the State Stomatological Academy Krasnoyarsk, Russia. In 2009 Frankenberger accepted the chair for dental conservation at the University of Marburg . Since then he has been director of the department for tooth preservation at the Medical Center for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine (ZMK) of the Philipps University of Marburg and the University Hospital Gießen and Marburg. From 2012-15 he was managing director of the Medical Center for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine at the University of Marburg.

Scientific contribution

Since the move away from dental amalgam , the biomaterials composite and ceramics have seen a significant upgrade. They allow the dentist to produce invisible and therefore aesthetic restorations. In most cases this requires an adhesive connection to the tooth. This gave rise to the field of adhesive dentistry. In addition to two textbooks, Frankenberger has also published scientifically on this subject. Initial preparatory work at the end of the 1990s led to the habilitation on the subject of “composite restorations in the posterior region with special consideration of dentine adhesion”, which was awarded the highest prize in German dentistry (Miller Prize).

Since the 2000s, the scientific focus has been the predictability of clinical outcomes through preclinical laboratory work. A significant work on this topic was awarded the Walkhoff Prize of the German Society for Tooth Preservation. Micro- and ultramorphological work on the composite-dentin and composite-enamel bond served to understand the microretentive nature of adhesive restorations. Simultaneously, several clinical studies with identical materials were launched to validate the quality of predictability from the laboratory. Another clinical study demonstrated the considerable influence of the practitioner on the clinical result. Studies on the repairability of adhesive restorations completed the picture.

More recent studies by Frankenberger deal with biofilms and their role in the development of secondary caries , with modern CAD / CAM materials, post-endodontic restorations and selected clinical problems in pediatric dentistry .

Frankenberger is an ad hoc reviewer for over 40 scientific journals and a member of numerous editorial boards of relevant specialist journals. He is editor-in-chief of “Quintessenz” and editor-in-chief of the “Journal of Adhesive Dentistry”.
