Roland Hempel (born July 29, 1928 ) is a former German football player who played in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , in the 1950s for the BSG Einheit Ost Leipzig and the SC Rotation Leipzig .

Athletic career

When the company sports association (BSG) Erich Ziegner Leipzig was founded in October 1949 , the 21-year-old Roland Hempel was part of the soccer team that was represented in the state class of Saxony . The team qualified at the end of the season for the newly established second-class league of the German Sports Committee from 1950/51 , which was later held under the name GDR League . The BSG went into the 1950/51 season under the new name Einheit Ost Leipzig and Hempel played all 18 league games. In the following two league seasons he was also not absent from any point game and was involved in the rise of the BSG in the league in 1952/53 with 24 missions and two goals.

In Hempel's first league season he had to cope with a longer injury break for the first time and had to sit out five of 28 point games. Although used continuously as a defender, he was able to score three goals. In November 1954 the soccer section of the BSG Einheit Ost was taken over by the newly founded Rotation Leipzig sports club. Several BSG players did not make the change, so coach Heinz Krügel was forced to rebuild his team. This also affected Hempel, who was ordered by the Abwehr to attack. He justified the measure by scoring seven goals after the conversion, although he was again sidelined for seven games. When in the fall of 1955 a transition round to change from the spring-summer season to the calendar year rhythm 13 league games were played, Hempel was fully operational again, was still called up as a striker in all transition games and scored two goals. The game year 1956 was Hempel's last league season. After he had completed nine point games in a row in the first half of the season, he was injured on the 11th match day and then did not return to top football. After six seasons in higher-class football, his balance was: 64 games in the league with 14 goals and 64 appearances in the GDR league with two goals.

He continued his football career as a coach and worked, among other things, at BSG Traktor in Belgershain .
