Roland W. Schmitt

Roland Walter Schmitt (born July 24, 1923 in Seguin , Texas , † March 31, 2017 in Scotia , New York ) was an American physicist and research manager.

Life

Schmitt studied physics at the University of Texas with a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics in 1947 and a master's degree in physics in 1948. In 1951, he received his doctorate in physics from Rice University . He then went to General Electric , where he ran the Schenectady Research Center (one of the largest industrial research centers in the United States) from 1978 to 1986 and retired in 1988. In 1982 he became senior vice president of GE.

From 1988 to 1993 he was President of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . He served on the National Science Board from 1982 to 1994 and its president from 1984 to 1988. He was also a board member of the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research from 2000.

From 1978 he was a member of the National Academy of Engineering , whose Arthur M. Bueche Award he received in 1995. He was a Fellow of the IEEE , whose IEEE Ernst Weber Managerial Leadership Recognition he received in 1989 and its IEEE Founders Medal in 1992. He received the Maurice Holland Award in 1988 and the IRI Medal in 1989 . He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the American Physical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
