Mario Lombardo (born August 12, 1972 in Rosario , Argentina) is a German designer and communication designer. His focus is on magazine design and moves in the cultural context of art, fashion, music, photography, design and architecture. He lives and works in Berlin .

Life

Lombardo came to Germany from Argentina in 1978 with his parents, who fled the country from the ruling military junta. The son of an architecture professor and a Spanish teacher grew up in Aachen. He studied communication design at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences.

His interest in design grew as a teenager: Magazines like The Face , ID and Tempo fascinated him, as did the LP cover design for bands like Joy Division , OMD and New Order . After graduating from high school, he worked for a year in the office of graphic designer Lo Breier ( Wiener , Tempo, Die Woche , ARD ). From 1996 to 2001 Lombardo studied graphic design at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences . He was influential as the art director of the pop culture magazine Spex , which he headed until 2006 immediately after graduating in design. Lombardo invented a style for Spex that emphasized handcraft in the age of computer graphics and thus triggered a renaissance of haptic illustration and experimental design. In addition to his work for Spex, he founded BUREAU Mario Lombardo in Cologne in 2004.

In 2007 he took over the art direction of the culture and fashion magazine Liebling (until 2009), whose large newspaper format provided new impulses. In 2008 he moved his office from Cologne to Berlin. In the same year he was voted "Visual Leader of the Year" by the LeadAcademy for all of his previous work. Since 2009 Lombardo has been in charge of various print products such as the magazines of the department stores Kadewe , Oberpollinger and Alsterhaus , the culture and fashion magazine Sleek and campaigns for Mercedes-Benz , Fiat and Absolut Vodka .

Lombardo prefers to work in an interdisciplinary manner, thus creating connections between language, space, aesthetics and material. In addition to magazines ( Dummy , Mono.Kultur, Page ) and books ( Die Gestalten Verlag , Verlag Hermann Schmidt , Hoffmann and Campe , Suhrkamp ), Lombardo also regularly designs record and DVD covers ( Rapid Eye Movies , Warner Music , EMI , Universal ) , Corporate Identities ( VIVA Germany , Bielefelder Kunstverein , Emschergenossenschaft , 7th Berlin Biennale ) and exhibitions ("Familiar Terrain" in the ZKM Karlsruhe , "Weltwissen" in the Martin-Gropius-Bau , Berlin).

Lombardo is a member of the jury for various photography and design awards (Gute Aussichten, LeadAward , Bridges). He teaches at various design colleges ( Bauhaus-Universität Weimar , Universität der Künste Berlin , Fachhochschule Düsseldorf , Fachhochschule Potsdam , Merz Akademie Stuttgart , Hochschule für Künste Bremen , Hochschule Pforzheim ).
