Lo Breier

Lodewijk Breier , common: Lo Breier , (born January 24, 1953 in Vienna ) is a German-Austrian-Dutch creative director and designer . He became known as the innovative art director of Zeitgeist - Magazines Wiener and Tempo . Breier was one of the first graphic designers to develop a comprehensive, holistic understanding of design. He is currently working with creative director Caroline Benzinger.

Life

Breier is the son of a Dutchman and an Austrian. He earned his first money selling Jimi Hendrix posters as screen printing . He found the buyers for it in the Viennese trendy eatery Camera Club , where the pop singer Falco also frequented.

Vienna ( Viennese )

After completing the master class at the “ Graphische ” in Vienna, the first success soon followed: Breier achieved 1st place for the best poster of the year for the city of Vienna . Breier later worked for design firms such as Fuhrherr and Mark & ​​Nevosad . The year 1980 shaped Breier's career path, and with it his work for the Viennese advertising agency GGK , which carried out the graphic design for the early Zeitgeist magazine Wiener . In 1984 the Falco album Junge Roemer, designed by him, was released .

Hamburg ( Tempo )

In 1985 the Austrian media manager Markus Peichl brought him to the Jahreszeiten Verlag in Hamburg , where another magazine with his graphic line was created: Tempo . From 1986 to 1996 Breier worked with Neville Brody on the Tempo magazine. "The success and influence of these magazines [Wiener and Tempo] was based on their strong visual language, which is strongly influenced by photography and typography , on the exciting dramaturgy that Breier developed for each issue."

In 1990 he took part in the founding of the design agency called Büro X   in Hamburg and Vienna and left them in 2000. He then founded the P. Agency for Brand Design and ended his management in 2003. As a reason for leaving the two He stated agencies: "We were too small for the really big customers, and in the end you can't really survive with the interesting little customers." a. In 2005 Breier was appointed professor for corporate design at the University of Essen . He also gave lectures and lectured at several art and design universities in Germany and Austria. Berlin ( Springer )

In 2007 he moved to Berlin for Springer Verlag as art director for Bild am Sonntag . He was also a member of the editor-in-chief and left Springer Verlag in 2015 . He then worked as a “freelance creative” for clients such as the University of Vienna , the Deutsche Bahn mobile magazine and for the ADC with the volume “WirD! 50 ideas for Germany ”. Breier is a member of the Art Directors Club (ADC) and the Creativ Club Austria (CCA) as well as a board member of the Lead Academy . In the mid-2010s he returned to Büro X's Berlin office .

According to Breier he is particularly pleased with three projects: the LP album Junge Roemer by Falco , the magazine Tempo and the exhibition poster for the documenta 10, .

In 2020 he was awarded in Frankfurt by ADC Germany for his life's work.
