The Rolandschule is a community elementary school at Rolandstraße 40 in Düsseldorf-Golzheim . The building was built from 1957 to 1961 based on designs by Paul Schneider-Esleben . On September 5, 1961, the school was opened as a Protestant elementary school. Today the school has around 260 students (as of 2011).

description

With the strict modular system , the architect is based on the works of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe . The school building "in its linear and cubic severity represents the Mies tradition in an almost classic way", but it "already hints at the aesthetics of the 1960s". Because of its convincing architecture, the building "quickly caught on and became a model for a whole range" of school buildings. The school was extensively renovated in 2005. The stress of 40 years of use, changed energy concepts, but also the removal of pollutants such as asbestos and PCB made this work necessary. The commissioned architects were able to coordinate with Schneider-Esleben, but the latter did not live to see the completion of the work. The renovation costs amounted to € 6.9 million and were completed in 2006.

Art historical significance

With the building, Schneider-Esleben wanted to create a "unity of visual art and architecture" and therefore included members of the Düsseldorf artist group ZERO in the planning. The result was a series of works of art, some of which are still in their place today, including the three kinetic objects in the foyer - a color organ by Heinz Mack , a grid sculpture by Otto Piene and a shadow play by Günther Uecker (disk balls). Since the school in its "original equipment is important for the history of architecture and the city", it has been a listed building as a total work of art since 1990. The light kinetic objects were restored in March 2011 by students of the CICS under the direction of Gunnar Heydenreich with a budget of 20,000 euros.

In 1961 Joseph Beuys was commissioned by the school's architect, Paul Schneider-Esleben, to make a play sculpture (doll) for the Roland School. Beuys made a nine-part reclining figure from teak, the individual links of which were connected with hemp rope. After Der Spiegel reported in December of the same year that “the heavy skull of the giant toy could kill a child”, the ropes were reinforced with aluminum brackets and the body of the figure was anchored in the ground of the school yard by the Düsseldorf architect Wolfgang Döring . In 1963, on December 20th, the director of the Rolandschule wrote to the building authorities that the doll needed restoration or had to be removed. Thereupon the work, after Beuys considered it to be completely mutilated and did not accept compensation, was picked up by him in 1964. Today it is part of the Beuys block in the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt under the title Jungfrau , 1961 .
