Rolf Herzog

Rolf Herzog (born May 14, 1919 in Oppach ; † June 24, 2006 ) was a German ethnologist and economic ethnologist . He did research mainly in North Africa, on nomads and in African studies.

Herzog worked at the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo from 1958 to 1964, and from 1965 to his retirement in 1987 he was professor of ethnology at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg . The chair was newly established when he was appointed to the University of Freiburg. Herzog mainly researched nomadic cultures in North Africa and economic-ethnological and cultural-historical topics of African studies. Herzog was involved in various offices in the German Society for Ethnology (DGV) and in the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 1995 he became an honorary member of the DGV.
