Rolf Irle

Rolf Irle (* 1935 ) is a German ethnomusicologist and collector with a focus on non-European musical instruments, an honorary citizen of the University of Hildesheim and Realschulkonrektor i. R.

Life

Irle grew up in Solingen and worked as a skilled worker in the regional steel industry. This was followed by studying to become an elementary school teacher and later the examination to become a secondary school teacher. Until his retirement in 1994 he was vice principal of a secondary school in Garbsen-Berenbostel near Hanover .

Rolf Irle has been dealing with the musical instruments of non-European peoples and cultures since 1960. He has now collected almost 3,000 musical instruments. These instruments are currently exhibited as the Rolf Irle Collection in Hildesheim and, together with the collection of the ethnomusicologist Wolfgang Laade, are part of the Center for World Music of the University of Hildesheim, which was founded in 2009 .

His daughter is the dancer Asmahan El Zein, born in 1961.
