Rolf Röpke (soccer player)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rolf Röpke (born September 12, 1936 ) was a soccer player with SC Aufbau Magdeburg , for whom he played in the GDR Oberliga , the highest East German soccer class.

Athletic career

BSG Motor Mitte, Magdeburg's leading football team in the early 1950s, had just missed promotion to the top division in the 1954/55 season with second place. The previous coach Johannes Manthey was then replaced by Heinz Joerk . Joerk wanted to start a fresh start with young players and in the summer of 1955 included the eighteen-year-old Rolf Röpke in the team. But it was only under coach Fritz Wittenbecher and as SC structure that the Magdeburg team managed to rise to the top class in 1959. At that time, Röpke was already part of the team as a defender.

In the first league season in 1960 he played all 26 point games, which he repeated again in 1962/63. His standard position was full-back, mostly on the right side. It was only in his last league years that he was used in midfield. After Röpke had only played seven league games in the 1963/64 season, he completed his last first division season in 1964/65. On November 29, 1964 he stood for the last time in the encounter between Motor Zwickau and SC Aufbau (1-0) in a league game, this time as the right runner, in the ranks of SC Aufbau Magdeburg. Within five years Röpke played 90 times in the GDR Oberliga, as a standard defender he scored a goal during this time.
