Rolf Rilinger

Rolf Rilinger (born April 21, 1942 in Posen ; † August 31, 2003 in Steinhagen ) was a German ancient historian .

Rolf Rilinger received his doctorate in 1972 from the University of Cologne with a dissertation on the subject of the influence of the election officer in the Roman consul elections from 366 to 50 BC. In 1980 the habilitation followed in the same place with the text Humiliores - honestiores. A social dichotomy in the criminal law of the Roman Empire . He taught as a professor at Bielefeld University from 1981 until a stroke ended his work in research and teaching in 1993. He died in 2003 at the age of 61. He was married to the historian Barbara Stollberg-Rilinger and the couple has two sons.

Rilinger was particularly concerned with the social and constitutional requirements for the success of the Roman Empire . In doing so, he repeatedly incorporated the methods and findings of modern social science into his research.
