Rolf Smedvig

Rolf Smedvig (born September 23, 1952 in Seattle , Washington , † April 27, 2015 in West Stockbridge , Massachusetts ) was an American musician . He was internationally known as a founding member and first trumpeter of the brass quintet Empire Brass .

At the age of 13 he played in the Seattle Symphony Orchestra; At 19 he was the youngest member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a trumpeter under the direction of Seiji Ozawa , after 8 years he became first trumpeter there. In 1981 he left the orchestra to begin a career as a soloist, chamber musician and conductor. He has recorded numerous CDs with solo concerts, ensembles such as Empire Brass, and major orchestras around the world.
