A brass quintet is a musical ensemble that consists of five brass players. In its modern form, it consists of two trumpets , horn , trombone and tuba .

history

The brass quintet became popular around 1950, when Robert Nagel and Harvey Philips founded the "New York Brass Quintet" . As a result, ensembles were formed not only within the wind registers of symphony orchestras, especially in the USA , but also at universities. Most famous was " Canadian Brass " , a quintet that shaped further development and led to a brass quintet movement.

The brass quintet movement was also well received in Europe and led to the establishment of the brass quintets there. Following the American model, not only members from the wind registers of the symphony orchestras came together, but also freelance musicians and brass players involved in the development of the chamber music repertoire commissioned original compositions. As a result, predominantly works were composed that can be assigned to art music.

The brass quintet established itself as a formation that is regularly represented at festivals and concert series of art music, such as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival , the Kissinger Sommer , the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival or the Prague Spring .

occupation

The modern instrumentation can be used in a variety of ways due to the wide range of notes, which ranges from subcontra-C to three-stroke octaves . Different instruments can also be used. The trumpet's instruments include the piccolo trumpet , the cornet and the flugelhorn . Instead of a trumpet , a euphonium can also be used; the tuba can be replaced by a bass trombone . Due to the variety of sounds, works of different characters have been composed. The Stockholm Chamber Brass ensemble, which was founded in Stockholm in 1985 and has premiered more than 30 works since it was founded, has played a major role in expanding the modern repertoire . In the USA, the American Brass Quintet is an important part of the repertoire development with over 100 commissioned compositions. The Ensemble Harmonic Brass , founded in Munich, is active in Germany and, like Canadian Brass , has its own publishing house in which it publishes arrangements and original works.

Numerous compositions were created for brass quintets, and an abundance of arrangements, including works by Johann Sebastian Bach, are part of the brass quintet repertoire.

Starting from the brass quintet have several brass ensembles of various occupations formed, which also cornet , tenor horn or Baritone / Euphonium be used.
