Rolf Walter (historian)

Rolf Walter (born February 14, 1953 in Kirchheim / Teck ) is a German historian . He is Professor of Economic and Social History at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena .

Life

After graduating from high school, Walter completed an apprenticeship as a banker in 1972 and began a diploma course as a commercial teacher in the 1973/74 winter semester at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. After graduating in 1978, he worked as a research assistant at the Chair of Economic and Social History at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. This was followed by a research stay in Venezuela and in 1982 his dissertation on the relationship between Venezuela and Germany from 1815 to 1870. In 1988 he completed his habilitation on the commercialization of agriculture and trade in Württemberg 1750-1850. In 1991 he was appointed to the chair for economic and social history at the University of Jena. From 1996 to 1998 he was Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics.

research

One focus of his research is the economic history of Venezuela, which he deepened in addition to his dissertation in a thesis on the Germans in Venezuela and in numerous articles. Many of his essays and articles have emerged from lectures at national and international conferences and deal with Venezuela's economic history as well as the development of trade fairs, exhibitions and individual companies as well as examples of European economic history. Walter has written various textbooks, an introduction to economic and social history, a history of the world economy and an economic history from mercantilism to the present.

He is co-founder and co-editor of Encuentros , Caracas 1983 ff., Since 1992 co-editor of Scripta Mercaturae and since 1995 of the yearbook for the history of Latin America .
