The von Rolls are an old noble Swiss patrician family in Solothurn . Branches of the family still exist. Members of the family were merchants in Geneva, where they received citizenship in 1371. King Sigismund raised them to imperial nobility in 1431 .

They are not to be confused with the families of the same name, the von Roll of the Urner Line and the von Roll of the Bernau Line , named after Bernau Castle , both of which have become extinct.

In 1495 Johann von Roll († 1528) became a citizen of the city of Solothurn and was elected to the small council six years later. After the early death of his parents he inherited all the rights and assets of his foster mother Küngold of Spiegelberg within Solothurn, including the small Twingherrschaft Emmen wood in Zuchwil belonged.
