Baron Ludwig von Roll (born April 19, 1771 in Solothurn , † August 26, 1839 in Bern , buried in the church in Kreuzen , Rüttenen ) was a Swiss officer , politician and businessman .

biography

Early years

Ludwig was a son of Field Marshal Franz Joseph, a Solothurn patrician , and Maria Anna von Diesbach. Ludwig completed his training as an officer in the French military and after his return in 1789 he worked in the Solothurn administration, from 1792 on as a major and war councilor. In 1792 he married Maria Ludovica von Stäffis. In 1794 he became a member of the Economic Society in Solothurn.

Political activity

In the Helvetic Republic he was a member of the administrative chamber and temporarily governor. He remained in the Solothurn executive from the time of mediation until his death, and from 1813 to 1814 he was also the delegate of the Diet . As President of the Finance Council from 1805 to 1835, he ensured the consolidation of finances, negotiated the coin concordat of 1825 and supported the construction of the Hauensteinstrasse . From 1831 to 1832, as Landammann , he brought continuity in the transition from restoration to liberal regeneration .

Entrepreneur

In 1810 he took over the company "Dürholz & Co." with a blast furnace in Gänsbrunnen . In the following time another blast furnace was set up in Gänsbrunnen and one in Klus near Balsthal , as well as hammer mills in Matzendorf and Gerlafingen . The stock corporation "Ludwig von Roll'sche Eisenwerke" founded in 1823 is the origin of the current von Roll Holding AG .
