Role (gymnastics)

Roll forward

A role (also known as somersault ) is a sequence of movements in apparatus gymnastics in which the gymnast rotates around a momentary axis of rotation combined with a translation . The axis of rotation is always at the point where the ground and the rolling body touch. Rolls can be performed both forwards and backwards. They are a basic element on the floor , but are also carried out on the balance beam .

In colloquial language, a roll forward is also referred to as a somersault (= see rearing up and then tumbling , first written mention in 1571), Kobolz , Kalabums , Kopsterbölter , Kusselkopf , Pusselkopp or Kisselköpper .

Movement sequence

Roll forward

Three gymnasts show the roll forward

From a standing position, the gymnast goes into a fleeting squat position. He puts his arms in front of him. While the legs are stretched, the hands are placed shoulder-width apart on the floor. The arms remain straight at first, the head is placed on the chest and the back is rounded. The gymnast extends his legs further, which shifts the body's center of gravity in the direction of the roll. In order to support the body weight, the arms are bent slightly. When the neck is put on, the actual rolling movement begins, in which the legs are properly stretched. As the gymnast rolls over his rounded back, he releases his hands from the floor and holds his arms in front of him so that he can stand up quickly. Just before the buttocks touch the floor, the legs are also bent so that the gymnast touches the floor with his feet at the end of the rolling movement. By pushing the knees through, the gymnast ends up standing.

backflip

Even with the back roll, the gymnast starts standing and moves down via the fleeting squat position. The arms are bent and the hands are moved towards the ears. The gymnast rolls backwards with a rounded back. When he has rolled far enough, he puts his hands on the floor. The fingers point towards the shoulders, the elbows point upwards. Body weight is now transferred to the hands and the Turner stretched quickly vigorously his arms. After a short period of support, he lands on his feet and his hands come off the ground. This is followed by a stretch jump.

Movement variations

Forward rolls are often performed as jump or flight rolls. Here, the role is turned forward from the two-legged jump, usually from a previous approach. By running up and jumping, a higher and further flight phase can be achieved, which is associated with a greater body extension than is usual with simple roles.

Free roles are also shown on the bar. This is a forward roll without placing your hands.

A common variation of the backward roll is the backward roll in the handstand. Here, the gymnast stretches his legs when rolling back and the arms are stretched by a quick hip extension so that the gymnast comes to a stand in a handstand . The difficulty of the element can be increased by subsequent handstands. Related to the roll backwards into the handstand is the rim roll , a roll backwards into the handstand with straight arms.

The rolling movement is also performed when rolling the handstand, but here from a handstand.
