Romain Moyersoen

Romain Jean Marie Baron Moyersoen (born September 2, 1870 in Aalst , East Flanders , Belgium ; † April 21, 1967 there ) was a Belgian politician of the Catholic Party and was not only mayor , but also a member of both chambers of the Federal Parliament and President of the Senate .

biography

After attending school, he studied law and received his doctorate and the doctorate in law . From 1908 to 1925 he was a lay judge for Aalst.

In addition, he began his political career with the election as a member of the Chamber of Deputies , in which he represented the interests of the Aalst district as a member of the Katholieke Partij from 1910 to 1919 . In 1921 he became a member of the Senate for the first time and was a member of it until 1950.

In December 1921, Prime Minister Georges Theunis appointed him Minister for Industry, Labor and Food in his cabinet. As part of a government reshuffle, he then took over the office of Minister of Economics in 1924.

After leaving the government, he was mayor of Aalst from 1925 to 1933 and then from 1934 to 1937 an alderman again.

He was also President of the Senate from July 1, 1936 to March 6, 1939. Due to his Christian-Democratic , moderately conservative attitude, he also supports many social issues in this position.

After Belgium was liberated from the German Wehrmacht in September 1944, Prince Regent Karl of Belgium entrusted him with forming a government; however, he did not succeed in forming a cabinet, so Prime Minister Hubert Pierlot remained in office.

For his services he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State on February 13, 1946 .

His son Ludovic Moyersoen was also a member of parliament and minister of justice , interior and defense .
