Roman Ryterband

Roman Ryterband (born August 2, 1914 in Łódź , † November 17, 1979 in Palm Springs , California ) was a Polish composer, conductor and pianist.

biography

Ryterband studied law in Warsaw at the request of his father. He also took piano lessons and was encouraged by Alexander Glasunow to continue his musical education. At the beginning of the Second World War he was on a journey through France and went to Switzerland on the advice of the Governor General of Nice. Here he studied musicology at the University of Bern , worked as a conductor and began to compose.

In 1955 Ryterband moved to Canada with his family. He became musical director of the CKVL radio station, taught at McGill University and conducted a Polish choir. From 1960 he taught at the Music Conservatory of Chicago College of Performing . He conducted the Southside Symphony Orchestra for several years and headed the Composers' Society of the International Society for Contemporary Music . The Citizen Council of Chicago named him Outstanding New Citizen of the Year in 1965 .

In 1967 Ryterband settled in Palm Springs. Here he founded the Palm Springs Festival of Music and Art , of which he became director. He taught at California State University in Los Angeles and performed as a piano soloist and accompanist.

Ryterband became known with the Dialogue for Two Flutes that was created in Chicago in 1961 . For the 200th anniversary of the USA, he composed the Tunes of America . His Suite Polonaise for piano won the Kosciuszko Foundation Prize . In 1978 he dedicated the orchestral version of the work to Pope John Paul II. The Polish pianist Peter Gach devoted himself particularly to Ryterband's piano works . In 1993 the violinist Francis D'Albert founded the Roman Ryterband Academy and Institute in Chicago .
