International Society for New Music
The International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) is the oldest international umbrella organization for the promotion of new music . It is considered one of the most important music-cultural societies in the world. In German-speaking countries it is also known as the International Society for New Music (IGNM).
organization
The IGNM was originally an initiative of the Second Vienna School during the Salzburg Festival and sees itself as an international network for the promotion of new music. It was published on August 11, 1922 at the suggestion of Rudolf Réti and Egon Wellesz and in the presence of the composers Béla Bartók , Paul Hindemith , Arthur Honegger , Zoltán Kodály , Darius Milhaud , and Anton Webern, and in the absence of Alban Berg , Maurice Ravel , Ottorino Respighi , Arnold Schönberg and Igor Stravinsky in the Café Bazar in Salzburg . After Richard Strauss took over the presidency of the founding committee, Edward Dent was elected first president. The seat of the umbrella organization ISCM, established in 1923, became London.
Her secretariat has been in Vienna since 2018. In 2019, Glenda Keam (ISCM New Zealand) will be elected president for the first time in the history of the ISCM on the occasion of the World Music Days in Tallinn.
The ISCM has 66 international sections in 44 countries. These are usually independent of the umbrella organization and send delegates to the general meeting of ISCM. The members of the sections are also members of the ISCM; they can propose up to six works for performance during the World Music Days. Country organizations that promote contemporary music but do not have the status of a national section of the ISCM can be run as associate members. This status is also carried over to the members of these organizations. Individual professional musicians are listed as honorary members.
ISCM publishes the World New Music Magazine .
