overview

Since it was founded in 1990, the Ensemble Musikfabrik has been one of the most famous ensembles of new music in Germany and worldwide. It is particularly committed to artistic innovation . That means new, unknown, unusual in their media form and often specially commissioned works are particularly encouraged and are part of the daily work of the ensemble, which often takes place in close cooperation with the composers . The Cologne- based international soloist ensemble presents itself in around eighty to one hundred concerts at home and abroad, at festivals, in its own world premiere series “Musikfabrik im WDR” and in regular audio productions for radio and the CD market. The Ensemble Musikfabrik is supported by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The ensemble made its debut on April 28, 1991 at the Witten Days for New Chamber Music , at that time under the name “Ensemble Neue Musik Nordrhein-Westfalen” . The actual amalgamation of the musicians took place at the end of 1990. At that time, the founding fathers of the ensemble, Bernhard Wambach , Nicolaus A. Huber , Gerhard Stäbler and the designated artistic director and conductor Johannes Kalitzke called together almost twenty musicians and presented the project to them. Most of them were very enthusiastic about the idea of forming a year-round professional ensemble for new, current music and developing their programs in close cooperation with the composers.

Since 1997 the Ensemble Musikfabrik has been organized on a grassroots basis, manages itself and makes all important, especially artistically significant, decisions within its own ranks. This led to the fact that the focus of ensemble work, initially still on the works of North Rhine-Westphalian composers, was increasingly expanded and internationalized. After the Amsterdam Asko Ensemble (founded 1965), the London Sinfonietta (1968), the Den Haager Schoenberg Ensemble (1974), the Paris Ensemble intercontemporain (1976), the Frankfurt Ensemble Modern (1980), the Klangforum Wien and the Freiburg ensemble recherche (both 1985) the Ensemble Musikfabrik succeeded in establishing itself as the youngest among the world's leading ensembles for new music .

In 2003 the Ensemble Musikfabrik moved from Düsseldorf to Cologne . Thanks to the support of the Kunststiftung NRW , the WDR and the KölnMusik , it was able to realize its world premiere series “musikFabrik im WDR”. Since summer 2008, the Ensemble Musikfabrik has been developing its concerts and programs in newly created rooms in the KOMED building in Cologne's Mediapark . In 2010 the ensemble gave the world premiere of the Klang cycle , the 24 hours of the day by Karlheinz Stockhausen, as part of the Cologne Music Triennale . It also realized the staged world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's opera SONNTAG aus LICHT at the Cologne Opera in 2011 . In 2013 the Ensemble Musikfabrik recreated the entire instrumentation of the American composer Harry Partch and premiered his stage work Delusion of the Fury at the Ruhrtriennale 2013 under the direction of Heiner Goebbels .

Interdisciplinary projects involving live electronics , dance , theater , film , literature and the fine arts expand the conventional form of the conducted ensemble concert as well as chamber music and the frequently sought-after confrontation with formally open works and improvisations . This also includes talk concerts and experimenting with concert formats that integrate the audience more closely.
