Roman Soukup

Roman Soukup (born April 10, 1955 in Decin , Czechoslovakia ) is a German photographer , artist and cultural manager .

Live and act

Soukup studied theater studies, then did a traineeship with assistant director at the Schauspiel Frankfurt am Main and worked as a theater photographer. 1981 he founded the Wolkenkratzer-Frankfurter Kulturelle Advertisements together with Lothar Krauss , which were transferred to the Wolkenkratzer Art Journal after a year . Soukup has headed the magazine from the beginning as publisher, editor and editor-in-chief in personal union, later as publisher and editor until the title was sold to art - Das Kunstmagazin in 1989.

In the spring of 1994 Roman Soukup was appointed managing director of documenta und Museum Fridericianum Veranstaltungs gGmbH for five years by the board of directors of documenta Kassel . At the Museum Fridericianum he worked with its director Veit Loers . For documenta X , which was planned for 1997 , he - together with its artistic director Catherine David - was entrusted with the preparations for the financing and organization of the event with a budget of twenty-two million DM. In July 1995 Soukup was dismissed by the board of directors on the grounds that the relationship of trust between David and him had been disturbed. His successor (until 2014) was Bernd Leifeld . A subsequent lawsuit was settled with a settlement that gave Soukup satisfaction, described his dismissal as unjustified, and awarded him full payment of his five-year contract.

From 1996 to 2001, Soukup was responsible for the development and implementation of marketing and sponsoring measures for the Münster sculpture projects in 1996, for the establishment of the Art Forum Berlin art fair and the Dresden art market as part of his office for cultural management , and in 1999 he took over provisional management the temporary art gallery Dresden. In 2000 Soukup curated the exhibition "Photographs by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner" in the Japanese Palace in Dresden , as well as the opening exhibition "Weimer - A Myth" of the Weimar European Capital of Culture with photographs by Ute Klopphaus in the Schiller Museum Weimar.
