Roman Wörndle
Roman Wörndle (born October 4, 1913 in Partenkirchen , † February 2, 1942 in Lemniza ) was a German ski racer . In the 1930s he was one of the best skiers in the German Empire.
He celebrated his greatest successes in 1936 at the Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . He took 5th place in the slalom, 6th place in the downhill and 5th place in the combined ranking. The following year, on February 15, 1937, he won the bronze medal in slalom at the Alpine World Ski Championships in Chamonix . At the 1938 World Championships in Engelberg , Switzerland , he finished 5th again on March 5 in the downhill (at the same time as Thaddäus Schwabl) and 6th in the combination.
During World War II , Wörndle served with the rank of NCO in a Wehrmacht ski hunt command . Wörndle died as a soldier on the Eastern Front in early 1942 during the war against the Soviet Union .
