Romanogobio antipai is a species of fish from the family of the gudgeon relatives (Gobionidae). The taxon was originally considered a subspecies of Kessler's gudgeon ( Romanogobio kesslerii ). The type epithet honors the Romanian zoologist Grigore Antipa , who collected the type material at the beginning of the 20th century.

features

Romanogobio antipai reaches a standard length of 71 millimeters. On the scales of the anterior part of the back there are elongated epithelial ridges. The number of rows of scales around the tail stalk is twelve. There are usually 8½ branched dorsal rays and 6½ branched anal rays. There are four rows of scales between the lateral line organ and the base of the breast.

Occurrence

The distribution area extends to the lower reaches of the Danube in Bulgaria , Romania and Ukraine as well as to the tributary Argeș .

Habitat and way of life

Romanogobio antipai inhabits the sandy bottoms in the deep waters. Nothing is known about the way of life.

status

Romanogobio antipai was declared extinct by the IUCN in 2008 because no reliable observations have been made since 1963. Specimens were caught in 1978 and 1992, but they were mistaken for Kessler's gudgeons. In 2016, the zoologist Tihomir Stefanov caught a specimen near the village of Vetren in the Bulgarian section of the Danube, with which the continued existence of Romanogobio antipai was confirmed in a study from 2019 .
