Life

Pramberger, named Julius , grew up in Pöchlarn and studied theology, law and philosophy at the universities of Vienna, Innsbruck, Rome and Salzburg. In 1899 he joined the Benedictines in Melk Abbey and from 1903 he was in Saint Lambrecht Abbey in Styria . In 1904 he was ordained a priest. In addition to his spiritual activities, he was curator of the Federal Monuments Office in Vienna until 1938 . From 1943 to 1947, the Pramberger Castle Curate was in Anif . During the Nazi era, Pramberger, who was considered critical of the regime, was protected from persecution by the head of the Ahnenerbe research association , Wolfram Sievers .

Pramberger was a folklorist in the traditional sense, i. H. active in the research and documentation of costume, folk beliefs and folk songs. He was a pioneer of field research and put on an extensive collection of folkloric objects that is kept in the St. Lambrecht Abbey. His main work, however, consisted of the collection of fairy tales and legends from Styria, which were mostly told to him by the people of the country themselves and which he wrote down for the first time. In 1935 he published a selection in the book Märchen aus Steiermark .

He was in close contact with other folklore researchers such as Viktor von Geramb . In the Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz there are 45 hand-written folios with around 500–600 pages each, including illustrations, which contain Pramberger's folklore notes.
