Ronald Louis "Ron" Ziegler (born May 12, 1939 in Covington , Kentucky , † February 10, 2003 in Coronado , California ) was press secretary in the White House under President Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1974 .

Life

Ziegler was born in Kentucky. During his college vacation he worked in Disneyland as a tourist guide in 'Adventure Land'. In 1962 he worked for the future president for the first time; Ziegler was a volunteer in Nixon's campaign for gubernatorial election in California .

In 1969, when he was 29, Ron Ziegler became the youngest press spokesman for the White House. He was also Nixon's press spokesman at the time of the Watergate scandal and described the entry into the Watergate building complex in 1973 as a "third-rate break-in [...] This is something that should have nothing to do with the political process."

Later, when Harry Robbins Haldeman was also heavily incriminated, he told the press corps, “I respect the free press. But I don't respect the kind of shoddy journalism practiced by the Washington Post . "

It later emerged that Ziegler had been inadequately informed.

Sometimes, however, Ziegler could also be the victim of Richard Nixon's indifference. During a performance in New Orleans in August 1973, an angry President was seen grabbing Ziegler's shoulder and pushing him away because Ziegler had not kept other journalists away from the President.

Ziegler was fanatical about loyalty to his superiors Haldeman and Nixon. This is why he was nicknamed "beaver patrol" (after beaver = beaver - a scout organization).

In February 2003 Ziegler died of a heart attack.
