Ronald Magill

Ronald Magill (born April 21, 1920 in Hull , Yorkshire , † September 6, 2007 in London ) was an English stage, film and television actor.

Life

He grew up as the son of a teacher couple. After his father died in 1929, Magill's mother returned to Ireland , leaving Ronald in an orphanage in Birmingham . He only saw his mother during the holidays.

Between 1963 and 1968 he worked at the Nottingham Playhouse in Nottingham as an actor and director. In 1970 he starred in a Julius Caesar film adaptation alongside John Gielgud and Charlton Heston . Since 1972 Magill has been one of the most famous actors on British television. He played the role of the grumpy pub owner Amos Brearly in the soap opera Emmerdale well into the 1990s. Occasionally Magill also directed the theater and wrote the book for a musical version of A Christmas Carol .

His partner David Soar, with whom he lived for 32 years, died in 1997.
