The Rondônia crested rat ( Ctenomys rondoni ) is a type of crested rat . The species lives in southwest Brazil and is only known from the states of Rondônia and Mato Grosso . The independent species status of the Rondônia comb rat is controversial, it is often regarded as a synonym of the two-colored comb rat ( Ctenomys bicolor ).

features

The Rondônia comb rat has an average head-trunk length of about 23.0 centimeters and a tail length of 8.0 centimeters, weight information is not available. It is a medium-sized species of the genus. The back fur is pale brown at the base and sepia colored at the ends of the hair. The head and the belly are slightly reddish brown.

The head is strongly developed and flattened. The intermaxillary bone is wide, flat and somewhat projecting to the side. The maxillary bone is narrow. The lower jaws are strong and expansive. The tympanic bubbles are flattened.

The Rondônia comb rat lives in southwestern Brazil and is only known from Rondônia and Juruena in the state of Mato Grosso .

Way of life

Little information is available about the way of life and habitats of the species in the southern Amazon region. Like all comb rats, it probably lives solitary and terrestrial and digs burrows in the ground.

Systematics

The Rondônia comb rat is classified as an independent species within the genus of the comb rats ( Ctenomys ), which consists of about 70 species. The first scientific description of the species comes from Alípio de Miranda-Ribeiro from 1914. The exact type locality is unknown and the species is only known from two specimens. Sometimes the species status is questioned and it is considered a synonym of the two-colored comb rat ( Ctenomys bicolor ).

Apart from the nominate form, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

The Rondônia comb rat is not considered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) as an independent species and is therefore not listed.
