The Rondellplatz is a square in the center of Karlsruhe . It is located at the intersection of Karl-Friedrich-Strasse with Erbprinzenstrasse and Markgrafenstrasse. It is part of the Via Triumphalis , which leads from the south via Ettlinger-Tor-Platz, Rondellplatz, Marktplatz and Schlossplatz to the main axis of Karlsruhe Palace . In the middle of the square is the Grand Duke Karl Monument, often called the constitutional column. It consists of an obelisk connected to a fountain . In addition, the Margravial Palace , an entrance to the Ettlinger Tor shopping center and the state trade office are located on the square .

The Rondellplatz appeared for the first time in a city map in 1768. From 1800 to 1809 residential houses were built on the square, in 1803 the Margravial Palace, which was built for relatives on behalf of the Grand Duke. The building was badly damaged in the Second World War; today only the center of the facade is preserved in its original form.

Constitutional pillar

The constitutional column was built from 1822 to 1827 based on the designs of Friedrich Weinbrenner . It is 7.80 meters high, made of red sandstone and is surrounded by two griffins facing north (towards the castle) , which were made by Aloys Raufer. There are also two lions as gargoyles in the south and north. Originally, the monument was not intended to be dedicated to Grand Duke Karl, but to serve as a symbol of Baden's power. For this purpose, the original intention was to engrave the distance between various Baden cities from Karlsruhe in the column.

Since the successor of Karl Ludwig von Baden was an opponent of the constitution, a picture of the Grand Duke and the text “CARL / GROSHERZOG VON BADEN” on the front and “THE FOUNDER OF THE / CONSTITUTION / DIE GRUENBARE STADT” on the back was not added until 1832 after his death / CARLSRUHE “attached. Since then, the monument has been dedicated to Grand Duke Karl , who once signed the Baden constitution , one of the most liberal of his time.
