Rondo (Graz)

The "Rondo"
In 2005 the towering Marienmühle gave way to the "Rondo"

The Rondo / Marienmühle is a building in Graz which was completed in 2007 and which not only houses residential, office and business premises but also studios for artists. The studios are financed by the State of Styria and the City of Graz and are available to the artists free of charge. The architect was Markus Pernthaler . The building is located in the Lend district near the main train station.

architecture

One goal of the Rondo / Marienmühle project by Markus Pernthaler is to upgrade the right bank of the Mur. The front of the building was a curved, translucent membrane made of polycarbonate multi-wall sheets . Large parts of this facade could not withstand a storm on January 27, 2008, were torn from their anchoring and fell onto the street. The building should be aesthetic and functional at the same time. The building surrounds an old park through which the Mühlgang flows. In this park there is a pavilion by the Graz architect Herbert Eichholzer , who was executed by the Nazis in 1943 and is a symbol of the resistance against the Nazi regime. This green area is intended to help the residents of the house relax.

Studios

Eight work studios, which are awarded annually, and four residential studios, which are awarded every six months, are housed in the Rondo. The studios are intended for artists and theorists and are awarded and supervised by the Instyria Kultur Service Gesellschaft by means of a tender. Above all, they are intended to promote artistic exchange between a wide variety of artists and art disciplines. The studios are rent-free and financed by the city and the country, the artists only have to bear the operating costs themselves.
