The Rongli Dam is a dam on the Rongli Chhu , a left tributary of the Rangpo Chhu in East Sikkim , India . It is one of two dams with which the two rivers Rongli and Rangpo are to be dammed for the 99-megawatt hydroelectric power station Chuzachen .

Technical specifications

The Rongli dam has a 39 m high concrete gravity dam . The wall volume is 45,200 m³. A 2077 m long headrace tunnel with a diameter of 3.1 m leads from the dam in the direction of the power station and joins with another headrace tunnel that comes from the Rangpo Dam . The common headrace tunnel measures 3225 m and has a diameter of 4.6 m. The adjoining pressure pipe is 801.2 m long and has a diameter of 3.3 m. The power plant has two vertical Francis turbines of 55  MW each and two generators of 61.1 MVA each  . The moated castle has a height of 137 m. The power plant is operated by Gati infrastructure .

bad luck

During the construction work for the Rongli Dam, a coffer dam , a temporary auxiliary dam, broke on April 16, 2009 at 9:00 p.m. There were twelve dead. The workers had night shifts in the tunnel construction site, which was flooded by the accident. The water ran over the dam after the water level rose rapidly. It was not stated whether there had been heavy rains in the area before.

The construction site was on one of two planned intake structures for a pressure tunnel . The foundation stone for the hydropower project was laid on February 6, 2007. The construction company Gati was accused of a lack of experience in dam construction projects.
