The Root River is a left tributary of the Mackenzie River in the Canadian Northwest Territories .

It rises in the Backbone Ranges , a part of the Mackenzie Mountains . At first it flows a short distance to the north. Then the Root River flows in an easterly direction through the Canyon Ranges . In the lower reaches, the river turns south and meets the Mackenzie River about 130 km northwest of Fort Simpson and 10 km north of the mouth of the North Nahanni River. The Root River has a length of about 220 km. The catchment area covers 9820 km². The mean discharge is 92 m³ / s.
