The North Nahanni River is a left tributary of the Mackenzie River in the Canadian Northwest Territories .
The river has its source in the Backbone Ranges , a part of the Mackenzie Mountains . It flows through the mountains in a predominantly eastern direction. In the lower reaches, the river valley forms the border between the southern Backbone Ranges and the northern Canyon Ranges . The North Nahanni River reaches the Mackenzie River after about 200 km. The mouth of the river is 105 m above sea level and is 110 km northwest of Fort Simpson . The catchment area of the North Nahanni River borders on that of the South Nahanni River in the southwest .
