Rosalia Ilfatovna Galiyeva

Rosalija Ilfatowna Galijewa ( Russian Розалия Ильфатовна Галиева ; born April 28, 1977 in Olmaliq , Uzbek SSR ) is a former Russian gymnast who was Olympic champion in 1992 with the team.

Athletic career

Rosalija Galievna started her career at VS Tashkent . At the 1991 World Championships in Indianapolis, she was one of the Soviet squad that won the team title. Swetlana Boginskaja , Tetjana Guzu , Tetjana Lyssenko , Oksana Chusovitina , Rosalija Galijewa and Natalia Kalinina won ahead of the ranks from the United States and Romania.

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona no more Soviet team competed, but the United Team for the Commonwealth of Independent States . With the exception of Natalia Kalinina, for whom Jelena Grudnewa was in the squad, the same gymnasts formed the squad for the United Team as in the previous year. In the team classification, the team won ahead of the Romanians and gymnasts from the United States. For the individual competition, Boginskaya, Lyssenko and Galijewa were qualified as the top three gymnasts in the team competition. The team management expected Tetjana Guzu to have better chances and canceled Galijewa from the competition due to a knee injury. Guzu won the title in the individual all-around.

In the next few years Rosalija Galijewa competed for Uzbekistan. She then moved to VS Samara and took Russian citizenship in 1995. At the European Championships in Birmingham in 1996 , the Romanian team won ahead of the Russians, for which Dina Kotschetkowa , Svetlana Chorkina , Rosalija Galijewa and Oksana Lyapina competed. On the balance beam , Galijewa won the title ahead of Romanian Gina Gogean .

In Atlanta at the 1996 Olympic Games, the gymnasts from the United States won the team competition ahead of the Russians and Romanians. In the Russian squad Kotschetkowa, Galijewa, Chorkina, Lyapina as well as Jelena Groschewa , Jelena Dolgopolowa and Evgenija Kuznetsova performed . As the second best gymnast in the Russian squad, Galijewa was also allowed to compete in an individual all-around event and took seventh place. She reached two device finals and took seventh place on the balance beam and fourth place in the jump .

Galiyeva ended her career in 1997. Later she took part in international competitions as a judge.
