Rosalind Carol Scott, Baroness Scott of Needham Market (born August 10, 1957 in Bath , Somerset , England ) is a British politician of the Liberal Democrats .

Life

Rosalind Scott was born to Kenneth Vincent Leadbeater and his wife Carol Leadbeater. Her father, a soldier of the Royal Air Force , was often deployed abroad; Scott therefore spent much of her childhood outside of Great Britain, including in Cyprus and Singapore . She attended Whitby Grammar School and Kent School. She studied at the University of East Anglia , where she graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in European Studies and German .

She was in the county of Suffolk in the context of local government as a councilor ( Councilor ) at both the district level (District) and at the county level (County). She was Councilor of the Mid Suffolk District Council (1991-1994) and Councilor of Suffolk County Council (1993-2005); There she was also group leader of her party. At the Local Government Association (LGA), the district government, she was initially (1996-1997) Deputy Chairman of the Transport Committee ( Transport Committee ), later committee chairman of the Transport Committee (2002-2004).

She represented Great Britain and the county of Suffolk in several international bodies, such as the North Sea Commission (1997-2005), the Council of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe (1997-2003), the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe (1997-2003) and at the Committee of the Regions of the European Union (1998–2002). She is also a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (since 2000) and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (since 2000).

She was a member of the Commission for Integrated Transport (2001-2007), a think tank , and from 2000 to 2007 Non-Executive Director of Entrust plc, the landfill tax regulator. She was also the non-executive director of Anglia TV (2002–2005) and has been the non-executive director of Lloyd's Register of Shipping since 2004 .

She is the Honorable President of the East Coast Sailing Trust. She is also a patron ( saint ) of Pickerel Environment Project, the Pakenham Water Mill Trust and the Wings of Hope Charity Appeal.

Chair of the Liberal Dimocrats

On November 8, 2008 it was announced that Scott had won an internal vote of party members for the chairmanship of the Liberal Democrats, in which they prevailed against Lembit Öpik . On January 1, 2009, she took office as chairwoman of the Liberal Democrats. At the end of 2010 she gave up the chair; Tim Farron was her successor in 2011 .

Membership in the House of Lords

On May 11, 2000, Scott was named a Life Peer . She bears the title Baroness Scott of Needham Market, of Needham Market in the County of Suffolk. In the House of Lords she sits for the Liberal Democrats.

On June 5, 2000, she gave her inaugural address.

In the House of Lords she worked for the Liberal Democrats in various party offices and functions. She was Whip of the Liberal Democrats 2001-2002), Deputy Parliamentary Secretary of the Liberal Democrats ( Deputy Chief Whip (2002), from 2001 to 2002 spokesperson for the areas of transport, local government and the regions ( Spokesperson for: Transport, Local Government and the Regions ) and Transport from 2002 to 2004. She was a member of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (Office of the Deputy Prime Minister / Communities and Local Government) from 2004 to 2009. Since 2010 she has been a member of the House of Lords Appointments Commission for the Liberal Democrats .

Transport policy is one of Scott's special political interests . She is particularly interested in the Commonwealth of Nations , India and the United States .

Private

Scott was married twice; their first marriage was later divorced. This first marriage has two children, a son (Jamie) and a daughter (Sally). In his second marriage, Scott married her party colleague Mark Valladares on April 22, 2008.

Her hobbies include walking and choir singing .
