Rose Schwarz (born January 23, 1935 in Vaihingen an der Enz ; † October 15, 2017 ) was an Africa missionary who, even in retirement, was involved in the Neema ya Mungu AIDS orphan project in Kenya for many years . She was a missionary in Ethiopia in the early 1970s. From 1978 to 2003 she worked through the Christian aid and mission organization DMG interpersonal in Kenya, where she set up medical stations in the countryside and at times managed the village health work of the Africa Inland Church . For her life's work, she received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon on September 26, 2014 .

Life

Rose Schwarz was born in 1935 to a preacher and grew up with seven siblings. At the age of 21 she joined the St. Chrischona Deaconess Mother House in Switzerland. She completed her training as a nurse and at the age of 26 became the head nurse in the operating room of the Dillenburg hospital . Shortly after her 38th birthday, Rose Schwarz began a missionary assignment in Ethiopia , which ended abruptly after five years when Emperor Haile Selassie was overthrown in 1974 and a communist government took power. After a transition period, she came to DMG in 1978, for which she worked medically in Kenya for many years. At first she was responsible for a bush clinic and the establishment of a medical work on the Somali border. She became a teaching nurse for African nurses and later headed the nursing school of the Inland Africa Church (AICT). In doing so, she helped to build up medical work in rural regions and at times managed it nationwide. As a DMG missionary, Rose Schwarz trained and motivated numerous nursing staff.

In 2000 she had to leave Kenya because of cancer . In 2003 she went into “retirement” in Germany. But from here she also helped her friends in Africa. A Kenyan pastor had taken in three AIDS orphans and asked Rose Schwarz for help. This resulted in the AIDS orphan project, which looked after 600 children in 2014.

Award
