The place is located 78 km south of Launceston and 117 km north of Hobart at an altitude of 186 meters above sea level and had a total of 276 inhabitants in 2011.
Ross is listed on the Register of the National Estate , a list that registers the natural and cultural monuments of the country. The historic bridge over the Macquarie from the 1830s, the oldest preserved stone bridge in Australia, and the sandstone buildings in the village are particularly well-known .
