The Rossendorf arrangement for critical experiments ( RAKE ) was a research reactor that was operated from 1969 to 1991 at what was then the Central Institute for Nuclear Research in Dresden-Rossendorf . The zero-power reactor had a thermal output of 10 watts and was used as a neutron source exclusively for research and training purposes.

history

Construction of the research reactor began in early 1969, and on October 3, 1969 the reactor reached its first criticality . The Rossendorf arrangement for critical experiments was the third nuclear facility at the Central Institute for Nuclear Research in Rossendorf; the Rossendorf research reactor had been commissioned twelve years earlier, and the Rossendorf ring zone reactor five years earlier .

The research reactor was finally shut down after 22 years of operation on November 26, 1991, the same year as the other two research reactors. On August 19, 1997, the Saxon State Ministry for the Environment and Regional Development granted permission to shut down the plant. The Association for Nuclear Process Engineering and Analysis Rossendorf was commissioned by the Free State of Saxony with the decommissioning and dismantling . The nuclear fuel was then unloaded and secured, and the reactor facility was then completely dismantled. On October 28, 1998, the plant was finally released from the scope of the German Atomic Energy Act .

construction

The Rossendorf arrangement for critical experiments was a tank-type nuclear reactor that was cooled and moderated with light water . The reactor had a thermal power of 10 watts, the maximum thermal neutron flux was 1 × 10 8 n / cm 2 s.

research

The research reactor was mainly used for reactor physics experiments, including the determination of critical masses , the effectiveness of control and shutdown technology , burn-up optimization , neutron flux distribution, and the validation and improvement of computer models . Furthermore, the critical arrangement was used to train the personnel of nuclear power plants in the GDR.
