The Research and Measurement Reactor Braunschweig (FMRB) was a research reactor that was operated from 1967 to 1995 at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig . The reactor was primarily used as a neutron source for basic research in neutron and solid-state physics . Furthermore, measuring instruments were tested and calibrated on the reactor and new measuring methods for dosimetry were developed.

history

Construction of the reactor began on October 1, 1963. The material test reactor of the swimming pool reactor type was then put into operation on October 3, 1967 after a construction period of four years. It used highly enriched uranium as a nuclear fuel and had a nominal output of 1 MW . The reactor was in normal operation until December 19, 1995. After that, it was put to a standstill for economic reasons. The final approval for decommissioning was finally granted on March 2, 2001.

The reactor was then dismantled by Babcock Noell, a subsidiary of Bilfinger Berger . All fuel elements were removed from the facility and disposed of in the USA . The dismantling of the reactor and the ancillary facilities left 160.9 tons of decommissioning waste . These were packed in special barrels and placed on site in a residual room specially set up as an interim storage facility. The dismantling was completed on July 28, 2005 and the reactor building was released from supervision under nuclear law. The decommissioning and dismantling of the reactor cost the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt a total of 16.3 million euros. This high sum is owed to the political goal of bringing the facility to full post-nuclear use; a complete demolition would have been cheaper.

After additional renovation and expansion work, the main workshop moved in at the end of 2012. The adjoining Meitner building, which used to house additional laboratories, has housed the offices of the associated PTB specialist department "5.5 Scientific device construction" for several years.
