The Neuherberg Research Reactor ( FRN ) was a nuclear reactor that was operated as a neutron source for research purposes from 1972 to 1982 at the Society for Radiation Research (GSF, today Helmholtz Center Munich ) in Oberschleißheim near Munich .

history

Construction of the research reactor began on January 1, 1969. The swimming pool reactor reached its first criticality on August 23, 1972. After ten years of operation, it was shut down on December 16, 1982. The fuel elements were then transported to the USA for final storage . On May 30, 1983, the Bavarian State Office for the Environment granted the permit for decommissioning. A year later, on May 24, 1984, the reactor facility was transferred to safe enclosure .

reactor

It was a swimming pool reactor of the type TRIGA -Mark III from the US company General Atomics . The reactor had a thermal output of 1  MW in continuous operation and up to 2 MW in pulsed operation. The maximum neutron flux was 3 × 10 13 n / cm 2 s. Almost 20 percent enriched uranium was used as nuclear fuel . The reactor was cooled with light water, for focusing the neutrons graphite - reflectors used.
