The multi-purpose research reactor Karlsruhe (abbreviation MZFR ) was a heavy water cooled and moderated pressurized water reactor on the premises of the Karlsruhe Research Center (today the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology ).
The plant was built between 1961 and 1965. The power plant had a gross electrical output of 58 megawatts and was critical for the first time on September 29, 1965 .
46 reportable events were counted during operation. Operations were hampered by leaks in the 1960s that released heavy water and radioactive substances. On March 2, 1967, six employees were contaminated due to an accident. From the 1970s onwards, the reactor ran largely trouble-free.
Until the reactor was shut down on May 3, 1984, the MZFR had generated around 5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity for the public grid. The reactor also served as a test facility for testing future heavy water reactor technologies.
The dismantling work for the dismantling is currently going on to the "green field". According to the original plans, the MZFR should have been completely eliminated by the end of 2006. It is now planned to start demolishing the reactor building in 2019. All buildings used for nuclear power are to be dismantled by the end of 2021.
The reactor parts (especially metal parts) that have become radioactive through neutron activation during the years of operation are collected separately when the reactor is dismantled and temporarily stored on the premises of Kerntechnische Abfall Karlsruhe GmbH .
