The Großwelzheim experimental nuclear power plant , also known as the Großwelzheim superheated steam reactor ( HDR ) with an electrical output of 25 megawatts, was located near Großwelzheim, a district of the municipality of Karlstein am Main .

The prototype boiling water reactor designed to produce superheated steam was built between 1965 and 1969. However, the fuel elements had structural defects, so that they would not have allowed operation at full power. That is why the reactor, which went into operation on October 14, 1969, was shut down again a year and a half later, on April 20, 1971.

After the shutdown in 1983, the facility was used for tests on reactor safety. The dismantling was completed in 1998.

The Kahl nuclear power plant , the first German nuclear power plant to be shut down in 1985 and dismantled from 1988 to 2008, was also located on the power plant site . This is the first German site where two reactor blocks have been dismantled.

When the municipality of Karlstein am Main was formed from the previously independent towns of Dettingen am Main and Großwelzheim in 1975, the atomic symbol was included in the newly created municipal coat of arms due to the nuclear power plant blocks, which is still valid today, although the HDR was no longer in operation at that time was.
