Rostam Ghasemi ; Persian رستم قاسمی; (Born May 5, 1964 in Shiraz , Fars Province ) is an Iranian general and politician .

On August 3, 2011, he was elected Minister of Oil, which means that at the same time, upon taking office, he held the rotation of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which was held by Iran up to and including December 31, 2011 . The American business magazine Forbes then put him on the list of the most powerful people in the world . At number 32, he was the most powerful secular Iranian since the list was drawn up.

Military career

His father, governor of Fars province and businessman, paved the way for his later successful military career at an early age. In 1981 he insisted that Rostam Ghasemi embark on a career as an officer in a non-combat military force at the age of 17. In the First Gulf War , between Iran and Iraq , large parts of the country were destroyed, whereupon the armed forces "Khatam Anbia Troop", to which he belonged, profited. The "Khatam Anbia Troop", a reconstruction, development and technical advisory force, played an important role during and especially after the war in the course of the reconstruction, especially in the destroyed petroleum infrastructure of the country. In 2001 Ghasemi became deputy commander of the force after Ali Jafari was awarded the supreme command. On September 1, 2007, Jafari was appointed commander-in-chief of the entire Iranian armed forces , whereupon Ghasemi followed again in the vacated office.

Political career

In 1988 Ghasemi was elected to the Majles , the Iranian parliament and confirmed in 1992 and 1996. On July 26, 2011, he was nominated by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iranian oil minister and was elected by parliament on August 3, 2011. After Ghasemi had to relinquish the post of oil minister after Ahmadinejad was voted out of office in 2013, he became a high-ranking advisor to the Defense Ministry under Hossein Dehghan on August 22 .
