The Rostkappen-Grundtyrann ( Muscisaxicola albilora ) or sometimes also Rotkäpchentyrann is a species of bird from the family of tyrants (Tyrannidae). The species has a large range that includes the South American countries Argentina , Chile , Bolivia , Peru , Ecuador and Colombia, as well as the Falkland Islands . The IUCN assesses the population as Least Concern .

features

The rust cap basic tyrant reaches a body length of about 17 to 17.5 centimeters. The forehead is brown and has a broad yellow-brown color at the rear part. The back is gray-brown to brown. The underside is adorned with a matt pale gray, which becomes whitish at the rump. The wings are only slightly lined. The white stripe above the eyes turns gray behind the eye.

In young birds , the entire crown is brown. The umbrella feathers, the middle and large wing covers are adorned with a thin, matt, reddish border.

distribution and habitat

Rusty cap ground tyrants breed on stony, barren, almost vegetation-free slopes near clear, water-bearing valleys. In winter, they are often found in swamps and near lakes. In summer they breed at altitudes of 1500 to 2500 meters on the Chilean side of the Aconcagua as far as the province of Magallanes . In neighboring Argentina they breed from the province of Neuquén to Santa Cruz and isolated in the plateau of Somuncurá in the province of Río Negro . In winter they migrate to heights between 3000 and 4000 meters to Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and the Nariño department in Colombia. In Peru in particular, they are very common in winter from April to October. In Ecuador they are considered to be more rare migrants, but occur as far as Pichincha near the Pichincha volcano . The ornithologist Bernardo Ortiz von Halle first detected them in 1990 on the Colombian island of Gorgona .

behavior

The Rostkappen basic tyrants are loners and only form loose groups on the train. During courtship in the air, she slowly rises with dangling feet and spread tail and then rushes to the ground. The whole thing happens relatively calmly. During their territorial fights, they threateningly raise one or both wings, ignite the tail and erect the rear parting. Occasionally they also bend their bodies. If they are very aggressive, they can be seen flapping their wings in the air, with their tails also fanned out.

Etymology and history of research

Frédéric de Lafresnaye had bought the type specimen for his first description from the natural produce dealer Charles Parzudaki (1806–1889) or his stepson François Charles Émile Fauqueux-Parzudaki (1829–1899). Parzudaki had received the hide from Chile.

The word Muscisaxicola is made up of the Latin words "muscicapa" and "Saxicola". "Muscicapa" is made up of "musca" for "fly" and "capere" for "to catch" and thus means "fly catcher". »Saxicola« also consists of the words »saxum« for »stone, rock« and »cola« for »inhabitant«. The specific epithet albilora also comes from Latin and is composed of "albus" for "white" and "lorus, lorum" for "stiffeners".

Remarks

  1. From the article it is not clear from which Paduzaki Lafresnaye received the type copy. Both persons come into question because they both probably ran a natural produce trade together at rue du Bouloi, 2 in Paris for at least some time .
